Pierce to Atkinson, NE – 79 Miles

I left Pierce, NE, at 6:30 am headed up RT 13 to RT 20 west. I enjoyed my morning with no traffic and the roads were smooth, so I could sit back, relax and putt along. The scenery is slowly starting to change. I am seeing more cattle and less crops. I attached a picture of Nelson and his wife Patty in Johnabilt. It was dreary and rained most of the day so it was not a good day to take pictures. It was so cold that I had the heater on all day. I arrived in O’Neil, NE, and stopped for gas. They had a small Deli inside and as I was getting my food to go and holding my ticket, someone grabbed my ticket! As I turned around it was my friends Nelson Kauffmen and his wife Patty they surprised me! Thank you for lunch. They drove 80 miles last night and came down to Pierce, NE, to visit me. They live north of O’Neil. They decided after church that they were coming down RT 20 and saw my rig at the gas station and couldn’t resist sneaking up on me. We chatted for a few minutes and then I headed out. I was planning on staying at a campsite just west of the town but when I got there they were closed. Someone needs to update their website, because they still advertise it on the Internet. It was only 12pm. I was able make good time not having rough roads and no traffic, so I putted another 19 miles and got to a campsite in Atkinson, NE. It’s right along RT 20. I pulled in and they did a double take! They wanted to hear all about Operation Second Chance.  The lady came out and thanked me again and I asked if I had any laundry. I did, and so she washed them and now I have fresh clean clothes again! Thanks for doing my laundry! Tomorrow I head towards Bassett, NE. I may go a little further since I won’t have as many miles. I had a number of visitors all evening and I finally got to go to bed. One  older gentleman and his wife came, he loved the tractor and has a John Deere A. He was in a wheelchair from a trucking accident.
